Timing can be everything in estate planning

Kelly Phillips Erb wrote recently in her Forbes column about reducing tax-time stress by getting an extension from the IRS.  It’s true, the yearly task of doing taxes causes anxiety for a lot of people, including, probably, tax preparers.  Applying for and receiving an extension from the IRS gives you more time to get things ready, a more comfortable deadline, and more breathing space as well. Alas, estate planning does not work quite the same way.  Timing can be everything in estate planning.  Of course, though one can petition the court for extensions on certain filings that doesn’t guarantee they will be granted. My main point though is that everyone should have an up-to-date estate plan.  It’s something you literally do not want to live–or die–without.  And, just like filing your income taxes, you’ll likely feel better when your estate plan is finished and you have your personal wishes and advance directives legally established.  And even more like taxes, if you don’t do an estate plan there is definitely stress ahead.  Maybe not for you, but certainly for your family and friends. See what I’m getting at?  It’s not easy being a responsible adult sometimes.  There are imperatives like deadlines, licenses, taxes, and estate plans that must be addressed, preferably in a timely fashion.  So I encourage you to start thinking about your plans now, for your future and your preferences regarding family, assets, and other personal matters.  And as far as timing:  let’s talk when you’re ready.   Bring your questions and your concerns and we’ll work through them to get your estate plan in great shape.  Of course, sooner is better than later, or not at all!
