The death of Robin Williams shocked and saddened many. Following his death, what should have been a simple estate administration, has turned into a longer ordeal than necessary for his family. Earlier we had written about blended families, and how we recommend properly identifying gifts you want to give specific family members. This is the issue that is hindering Robin Williams’ estate administration: his second wife is contesting his childrens’ claim that they have a right to certain memorabilia in the home Robin shared with his second wife.
In his trust, Robin had stated that his home he shared with his second wife would be given to her upon his death. He also stated that he wanted his children to evenly divide his personal possessions such as his theater memorabilia and watch collection. Robin’s second wife is arguing that she is entitled to whatever personal effects are in the home she shared with Robin, not his children.
Despite Robin being one of the most private celebrities of his generation, his estate has unfortunately remained in the spotlight. The lesson to take away from this Hollywood tragedy is that although you might have your Trust executed, you should take extra care to properly identify which items you want specific people to receive and properly update the documents over the years.
The benefit of executing a revocable living trust is to not have your private life debated in the courtroom. We work with you throughout the entire estate planning process to ensure that all of your intended wishes are properly prepared through your documents.818.956.9200
