Estate Planning: A Different Kind of Holiday Plan
As the holiday season fast approaches, no doubt many of us are looking forward to family gatherings (and meals!). But on the flip side, there are probably many people who anticipate some tension at this time of year. Some divorced or re-married folks split up meals: dinner at one family home, dessert at another. There may be stepchildren, exes, former and present in-laws. People with elderly relatives might catch themselves or other family members studying the furniture, the heirloom china, and each other, each thinking about their hoped-for inheritance. And what about next year? Will we all be together? Will we all still be speaking?
Another anxiety-causing holiday custom: at this year, many people find themselves reviewing the past year as well as looking forward to the next. We count our blessings, but we must also consider the unforeseen. With that in mind, there is something that could grant extra peace of mind as you survey this year’s assembled family, and that’s a well-organized, up-to-date estate plan. A will, maybe a trust. Health directives, designation of a guardian for minor children, powers of attorney, specific bequests. And everything properly documented with the help of an experienced estate planning attorney.
So consider this my holiday invitation to you. Whether you wish to review your current arrangements or begin an estate plan, please call our office for an appointment. I can help you put together plans that meet your needs.
