Every client is unique.  No client is typical!

You may very well read this blog and think, oh, none of this really applies to me.  I don’t need an estate planning attorney.  Now, that could very well be true for the present, but the fact is, lots of people, at different points in their lives, have availed themselves of my estate planning and legal services.  So instead of discussing a point of law, this blog will be devoted to a general discussion of my clients: past, present, and future.

Who are my estate planning clients? People of all ages and financial statuses.  From newlyweds to young parents.  Philanthropists to businesspeople.  Grandparents to godparents.

What does it mean to be my client?  You are the person for whom I work.  At your behest I will prepare and file legal documents, conduct research, go to court if necessary.  It is your interests, and your rights, that I will assert, protect, and defend.

If someone pays the bills and/or legal fees, is that person the client? It depends.  My client is the person for whom I am preparing legal work, and our relationship is confidential and protected by law. If someone else is paying the fees, I am still working for the person on whose behalf they are paying, not the person writing the check.

If you assist a friend, an aging parent, or anyone else by referring them or bringing them to see me about estate planning, and even if you wish to help them further by  paying my fees, that payment does not confer on you a right to that person’s confidential information.  My clients can waive the right to confidentiality in writing, which would allow me to share information with a third party.   That is the only exception.
