Recently, travel
blogs and other media are posting that it is possible to inherit or use airline reward miles from someone who has died. Of course, some airline programs have explicit policies against this. But some do allow it, for a fee, which could range from nominal to pretty hefty. Most importantly, the ones that do allow it, want to see a formal document in place, such as a will or a divorce decree from a court, assigning the miles to another person.
I know that it sounds silly, but deciding who will inherit your airline miles? Really? A diamond ring, or a house, sure. Intangible things though? Yes, in our digital age, even text, media, images, and online accounts – called “digital assets” – can be inherited. And intellectual property, including software, copyrights, licensing – there are a multitude of laws that govern who benefits from those.
Whatever is yours to give, the last thing anyone wants to inherit is hassles. That’s where I come in. All things related to wills and estate planning are in my professional bailiwick. So if you have questions – I have answers. When it comes to matters this important, no one should have to fly solo.
