It seems celebrity rumors are all over the media, all the time. For example, one recent rumor announced that acress Charlize Theron and actor Sean Penn are engaged. Then, a mere few days later, that rumor was squelched, with the couple announcing in news stories that they are ” just good friends”.   With divorce a common occurrence, it’s always fresh news when an celebrity couple plans to marry.

But what about the rest of us non-celebrities? Do we get showered with media attention when we announce our impending marriage? Not so much. What most of us are showered with are new responsibilities, such as where to live, custody arrangements for children, and financial arrangements. Oh yes, and that other big responsibility: creating or revising an up-to-date estate plan.

Newly married couples should be sure their wills and/or trusts reflect their new status. This applies to beneficiaries, powers of attorney, trustee designations, and guardianship designations, if children are involved (or on the way). The family that pays attention to this task may be spared both present and future confusion, conflict, and even court involvement, if their wishes are clearly and legally established.
