What Everyone Needs to Know Before Signing a Contract

People sign contracts every day: employment contracts, contracts with a new business vendor, contracts for a new mobile phone or a gym membership. And more often than not, it’s done blindly. We either don’t take the time to read them thoroughly or we just don’t understand the legal jargon. But it’s important to know exactly what you’re agreeing to before signing on the dotted line.

Here are a few things to consider before you sign your next contract:

•Who are the parties involved in the contract

•What is the specific length of contract

•Are you able to terminate the contract at any time? If not, when?

•What happens if you terminate your contract before the designated time? Will you pay penalties? Is there a way you can terminate without penalties?

•What is each party responsible for under the contract?

•If you are buying a product or service, how much are you required to pay? When is payment due? And what are you getting in exchange for payments?

Another important thing to consider is that many times, when a contract is negotiated, additional terms are agreed to as part of the negotiation. But, we’ve seen numerous situations, where the additional “agreed” upon terms have not been added to the final contract that you sign. Remember, if a term is not in the contract you signed, then it doesn’t count.

Having dealt with many contracts and the issues that follow, we can’t stress enough the importance of taking the time to read and understand your contract. Because once it’s signed, it is a binding legal document. So, before you sign on the dotted line next time, feel free to give us a call to look it over. We’ll gladly help. 818-956-9200
