The LA Times and other news outlets have taken note of a fascinating trend in personal grief-related expressions after a loss.  Memorial vessels are now more personal than ever.  Instead of utilizing traditional funeral home offerings such brass or metal urns, families are instead seeking out artists to provide a unique vase or other object to contain the cremated remains of a loved one.   These vessels can take form in artistically crafted or organic media such as metal, ceramic, wood, glass, or stone, and may be designed with the intention of being situated outdoors, displayed indoors, or interred as in traditional burials.

Of course, the experience of grief is very personal and not every form of expression, whether emotional or artistic, is going to appeal to everyone in the same way.  I have found that the same is true for the plans and directives included in one’s estate plan.  Very often a client will ask my advice on doing something that may seem different or unusual to some, but carries great personal meaning to the client in terms of fulfilling his/her future wishes.  This is an area of law in which I am quite experienced, and it is also the point of this discussion.  Insure that your personal wishes and charitable directives are followed as you want them to be.  For that, it is essential to have an up-to-date and legally valid estate plan, including a will, and even possibly a trust.
