Modern families, future issues

All those blended, multi-generational families on TV. How cute are they? And funny!  From old-school Brady Bunchers to Modern Families, it’s all about hilarious hijinks, cute and sassy kids, and non-traditional parenting.  But, as we all know, tv is not a whole lot like real life:  there are the exes, both sets (or more!) of grandparents, the kids from previous marriages or relationships, the adopted kids, siblings’ kids, cousins’ kids,  the pets who are treated like kids, guardianships, caregivers, birth parents, surrogates…you get the idea.

In estate planning terms, it can be more like a nightmare than a comedy.  Every new relationship, marriage, life partnership, birth, and death means changes in current living situations as well as to future plans.  Take assets and in inheritances, for example.  Are children from different marriages treated differently in a grandparent’s will?  Are certain individuals excluded entirely?  Who does the law favor in a particular situation?

In Los Angeles, life can be defined by ratings, but really, it’s always about more.  I think it’s about protecting everyone you love from future disasters and squabbling by having your wishes and directives clearly detailed in your estate.  Maybe it’s serious and hard and there’s no laugh track, but the time you devote to careful planning and to getting the right legal advice can make all the difference in the world to your family.  No matter how old-school or modern you are.
